Living in Louisville, Ky., Thornton Blackburn met the beautiful slave nurse-maid who would become the love of his life. His mother was moved as well, putting 18 aching miles between them. At the tender age of three, Thornton was abruptly taken from his mother and sold to new owners in Washington, Ky. Sibby's first child disappeared from the records, and the second, Alfred, was sold at age 11. Her last name, Blackburn, was the surname of her masters.Ĭhildren were the chattels of slave owners. Sibby (born 1776) was a slave from birth as well, working long, grim years in farm fields and household duties in Virginia. A light-skinned mulatto, there were no records of who his father may have been. When his wife was about to be taken away and sold to another master, Thornton and Ruthie Blackburn made clandestine plans. Black people could live in relative freedom and prosperity, and families could stay together. There was a place where laws were reforming. Treated as if they were less human, as if they could not learn, as if they could not care for themselves, they were black slaves. They also were bound by chains, both invisible and tangible, and lived with fear and anguish. Most were hardworking, intelligent and capable, living in the southern United States. Many had strong faith and an irrepressible hope. Some had loving spouses, parents and children.
